Abstract: Different from conventional line-of-sight optical communications, ultraviolet communications can achieve non-line-of-sight communication, and thus it can be widely used in scenarios where line-of-sight links are unavailable. In recent years, the rapid development of the industrial internet spurs the demands of communications among industrial equipment with high capacity and flexible networking, which brings new opportunities for ultraviolet communications. To propel the practical research of ultraviolet communications, the major applications and the state-of-the-art developments on ultraviolet communications are investigated, especially in crucial techniques such as hardware experiments, channel modeling, channel estimation and detection. Spatial diversity technologies are introduced. The future research directions and challenges of ultraviolet communications are also envisioned, including ultraviolet relay and duplex communication, ultraviolet sensor networking, and non-line-of-sight positioning.

Key words: ultraviolet communication, non-line-of-sight communication, non-line-of-sight positioning
